Humayun Ahmed, the name itself is synonymous to modern bangla literature. He was the most famous novelist, dramatist, screenwriter, play-writer, Lyricist and filmmaker. Humayun Ahmed wrote hundreds of famous books. His first published novel is Nondito Noroké. That was an wonderful start enriching bangla literature. Later he introduced a new style of writing. besides novels, he wrote some science fiction and some books for children. Himu, Misir Ali andShuvra are the most popular characters created by his magic writing. He was a former professor of Chemistry at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Personal life

Humayun Ahmed was from Kutubpur village in Mymensingh District. But he was born at Mohongonj in Netrokona District at his maternal grand father's house. His father's name was Faizur Rahman Ahmed and mother is Ayesha Foyez. His father was a police officer and was killed by Pakistani Army during the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971. Humayun Ahmed spent his childhood in various places of Bangladesh mostly in Sylhet for his father's transferring job. Humayun's younger brother, Muhammed Zafar Iqbal is a university professor. Zafar Iqbal is also a famous writer of mostly science fiction, books for children and a newspaper columnist. Another brother, Ahsan Habib, is a painter and the editor of famous cartoon magazine Unmad.
Humayun Ahmed spent his childhood and early student life in various places of Bangladesh such as Sylhet, Comilla, Chittagong, Dinajpur and Bogra for his father's transferring job. Humayun Ahmed was a meritorious student. He passed SSC exam from Bogra Zilla School in 1965 and stood second in the merit list in Rajshahi Education Board. He passed HSC exam from Dhaka College in 1967. Later he was a student of Chemistry in Dhaka University and achieved B.Sc (Honors) and M.Sc in First Class with distinction.
Then Humayun Ahmed joined Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh as a lecturer and After expiry of six months he joined Dhaka University as a faculty of the Department of Chemistry. Later he went to North Dakota State University and achieved Ph.D and then came back Bangladesh and resumed his teaching career in Dhaka University. In mid 1990s he resigned from the faculty job to dedicate all his time in his creative works i.e. writing, film and making etc.
Humayun Ahmed was married two times. Firstly, he married Gultekin, granddaughter of Principal Ibrahim Khan, in 1973. They had three daughters - Nova, Sheela, Bipasha and one son - Nuhash from that wedlock. Later, Humayun divorced Gultekin in 2003 and married Shaon in 2005. From that second marriage, they had two sons - Nishad and Ninit.
Humayun Ahmed had been suffering from colorectal cancer and died on 19 July 2012 at 11.20 PM (Bangladesh Standard Time) at Bellevue Hospital in New York CITY while under treathment. He was buried in Nuhash Palli, his another wonderful creation.

In 2012 he was appointed as a special adviser to the Bangladesh Mission in the United Nations. To establish a modern cancer hospital was his last dream.

Television drama and film

Humayun Ahmed was a famous play writer. He wrote lots of television drama. He also directed lots of television drama. His first television drama was "Prothom Prohor" (first moment) in 1983. His first drama serial was Ei Shob Din Ratri. Later he wrote Bohubrihi, Kothao Keu Nei, Nokkhatrer Raat etc. His television dramas became so popular that no 'Eid Festival' could not be imagined without his drama in television.
Humayun Ahmed directed a number of films based on his own stories. His first film was "Aguner Parashmoni", based on the liberation war 1971. He was awarded the National Film Award for this film.
Humayun Ahmed was also a lyricist. His songs were used in few of his own films and dramas.

Humayun Ahmed was a great fan of Moonlit Night.

Most popular characters created by Humayun Ahmed are Himu, Misir Ali andShuvra. He introduced a new style of writing. He wrote hundreds of books in various category such as fiction, travel story, science fiction, books for children etc.

Awards

Humayun Ahmed was awarded various awards for his writing and other creative and cultural works.
He was awarded Bangla Academy Award in 1981, National Film Award for best story in 1993, for best film in 1994 & for best dialogue in 1994 and Ekushey Padak in 1994.
He was also awarded Lekhak Shibir Prize in 1973, Shishu Academy Award, Jainul Abedin Gold Medal, Michael Madhusudan Medal in 1987, Bacsas Prize in 1988,Humayun Qadir Memorial Prize in 1990,ShelTech Award in 2007.
